Soothe Puffy Eyes

Most of us have experienced it: that puffiness under our eyes, making us look tired and worn out. We asked a prominent dermatologist in New York City to help explain why this happens, how it can be prevented and what can be done to minimize puffiness.

The Basic Facts

The skin under the eyes is the thinnest anywhere on the body and is prone to dryness due to having fewer oil glands than the rest of facial skin. Fat pads surround the eyes, and the muscles that encase the upper and lower eyelids hold the fat (and skin) in place. There are plenty of blood vessels around the eyes, which can show through the thin skin, contributing in some cases to dark under-eye circles. Fluids that get trapped in eye tissue can trigger puffiness, while excess fat in the area can produce a permanent puffy look.

What To Look For

Puffy eyes aren't hard to spot--but can go hand-in-hand with a variety of causes:

  • Allergies And Sneezing - Watery eyes can accompany under-eye swelling; antihistamines can help.
  • High Blood Pressure - This condition can push fluids into the tissue surrounding your eyes.
  • Bloating - Too much alcohol and/or salt can make you store water everywhere, including around the eyes.
  • Heredity - sometimes the only cause is genetics.

Simple Solutions

There are options for treating puffiness. Beauty Rx:

  1. Limit your intake of alcohol and salty foods and drink plenty of water. Proper hydration is key to helping your body and skin look and feel their best.
  2. Apply a cool compress, such as convenient CoolEyz pads, sit for several minutes with chilled slices of cucumbers or tea bags, wet cotton balls or a cold washcloth over closed eyes. Keep CoolEyz in your refrigerator, the cold helps constrict blood vessels, decreasing swelling.
  3. Try a home eye treatment. Look for products with caffeine, yeast and/or cucumber to decrease swelling.
  4. Consult a doctor about surgery. Blepharoplasty, a procedure in which a plastic or dermatologic surgeon removes the excess skin and/or fat around your eyes, can help. Temporary side effects can include bruising and swelling. The cost: $2,000-$5,000.
